Official Dedication of GFS Monument
A dedication ceremony was held at the George Fish School Monument at 401 Steele Street on August 31, 2008. Duke Energy granted the easement to the George Fish School committee to erect its monument of this historic site. The dedication was in tribute commemorating the teachers of the all black school, which was built in 1925, with its last graduating class in 1968.
Rev. Phillip F. Cargile, Sr., pastor of First Born Church in Rock Hill delivered the invocation. Rev. Cargile, a Fort Mill resident and visionary who pioneered the efforts of the Alumni, worked closely with Duke Energy in securing the site.
The Honorable Mayor Danny Funderburk, Town of Fort Mill, gave the greetings and congratulated the alumni for its participation in the community and the urgency of volunteerism throughout the township.
The Alumni Association is establishing a scholarship committee to award scholarships to worthy recipients in the third quarter of 2009.
