The George Fish School Memorial Monument

Rainwater says: The culmination of the faithful effort to bring together the unveiling of such a beautiful monument was a joint effort of dedicated people. These people loved George Fish School and wanted to leave a legacy. We could say mission accomplished; however, the mission is not accomplished. It is appropriate to say it is the Alpha of things to come.

We loved George Fish School and made many friends, especially when the Lancaster County students arrived in 1955. Our friendships with them have lasted throughout the years.

Our educators were tops. I can't say enough about them, the cafeteria staff, and the custodial staff.

Professor Lemuel Moore was principal when I started school. I remember him vaguely. He visited my parents many times during his tenure.

When Professor James A. Castle and his wonderful wife, Mrs. Amanda P Castle, arrived, it didn't take long to see the school begin to change. Actually, it was a continuation of Professor Moore's vision.

We saw our school turn into one of the best schools in our area. We had a cafeteria--not a cafetorium. Our gymnasium was the best around. We had a lot of fun, but when it was time to get down to work, we didn't hesitate.

Our largest graduating class in 1964 was a grand total of 23 students. The President of the George Fish School Alumni Committee, John Sanders III, was a member of that class.

"It Takes a Village" is very fitting for Paradise. We had to be careful going to school and returning home. Every elder was our parent, and we respected them. Boy, did they watch us.

We had to hope the teachers did not visit our homes if we had done something improper in school and if our grades were falling. Of course, we knew they would come.

I had no intention of writing this much, but nostalgia took over.

There is one final thing. To The George Fish School Alumni who didn't participate, you missed something that you won't have the chance of being a part of again. People traveled great distances while some people in the area were not to be seen. It's not too late to get on board because the mission has just begun.
